2 icebound ships freed off Russia - The Washington Post: "MOSCOW -- Two Russian ships that were trapped in thick ice off the country's east coast made it to clear water on Wednesday, but one of the icebreakers sent to rescue them was stuck for hours.
Three other vessels, with a total of more than 430 crew aboard, remained trapped in the Sea of Okhotsk for a sixth day Wednesday. The transportation ministry says those vessels have sufficient fuel and water, and there is no danger to those aboard.
A trawler with 78 people aboard was towed to waters where ice is lighter on Wednesday, Russian news agencies reported. It was seen as the ship most in danger because it was the closest to shore and it was feared that the drifting ice would push it into rocks that could puncture the hull.
But an icebreaker following behind became stuck; it reached clear water late Wednesday, the transport ministry was cited as saying by the ITAR-Tass news agency."
